An ESX (commonly associated with Estimate Xactimate) file is a compressed archive used to store insurance claim estimates created by Xactware Xactimate, a software for estimating property damage repair costs. It contains essential information such as estimated costs, damages, policy details, deductibles, dates, and related images. ESX files help users save, organize, and share insurance claims.

The ESX file format was introduced alongside Xactimate to provide a standardized way of handling digital insurance claim estimates. While the exact release date is not widely documented, it has been in use since the early 2000s as part of Xactware's software ecosystem.

Insurance adjusters, contractors, and restoration professionals use ESX files to create, store, and share detailed repair cost estimates. These files allow for efficient documentation of damage assessments and facilitate communication between insurers and service providers. Users can export ESX files to share with others or import them to continue working on estimates.
