GIS Files

A GIS (Geographic Information Systems) file stores geographical information in an encoded format. GIS files are categorized into raster, vector, grid, and other formats.

Raster files consist of pixel data in rows and columns, with each cell storing a single value, typically a color. Additional values can include color temperature and saturation.

Vector files represent geographical features using shapes: zero-dimensional points for single references, one-dimensional lines (or polylines) for linear features, and two-dimensional polygons for specific areas.

GIS files are used by mapping software and GPS systems to store terrain information, including elevation, topography, distances, and routes.
