Disk Image Files

A disk image file stores the complete contents and structure of a disk, such as USB drives, hard disks, CDs, and DVDs. It is an exact copy of the disk and can include file system information.

Disk images are created by making a sector-by-sector copy of the source disk, replicating its structure. Depending on the source disk’s size, a disk image can consist of multiple files.

Some disk image formats support compression (of used space) and omission (of empty spaces) to reduce the overall size.
